Not everyone wants to wake up at dawn and head to the top of a mountain or nearest beach to see the sky light up, but it’s always been my favorite way to spend a morning. There’s something about watching the sun peak out over the horizon that makes me feel alive and excited to begin the day. If you begin your morning with a sunrise, you are bound to be in a good mood. Set your alarm, sacrifice a little sleep and get outside as often as possible.
Here are a few of my favorite stops around the island.
Sandy Beach
We used to live close to Sandy Beach so this was our regular hangout, but proximity isn’t the only reason we love it so much. There aren’t many people here in the early mornings, the views are unbeatable and there are options for where or how you can enojy the sunrise. You can take a long walk on the soft sand or go to the far side and check out the tide pools—either way is perfect!
Makapu’u Lighthouse Hike
This hike is very popular, but fewer people arrive before sunrise. Mid-day it’s especially hot with the lack of shade on the asphalt path, but early in the morning is nice and cool and the view from this high up is quiet and serene. During whale season, it’s the perfect hike to see some action. On this particular day, we saw a mom and her baby playing, jumping, and splashing around so close to the shore!
Lanikai Pill Boxes Hike
This hike is becoming more and more popular because of the sunrise views over the Mokes. It can be a short climb if you stop at the first or second pillbox to see the sunrise, or you can keep trekking for a longer workout. What I love most about the pillboxes is that you can see this view within minutes of starting the trail. If you’re climbing before sunrise, bring a headlamp or use your phone as a light so you can see your path along the way and be quiet walking through the neighborhood to respect the locals.
Kailua Beach
If you aren’t up for a hike, going to Kailua Beach for a 3-5 mile walk/run or just sitting on the sand is a great option. Walking in powder-soft, white sand as the sky glows might be the most relaxing thing I’ve ever done. It’s quiet, except for the sound of the waves lapping against the shore, the water is always warm and the sand is smooth under your toes. It’s great during the day too, but early mornings should not be missed. Bonus if you like dogs—there are always pups splashing around in the water or going paddling with their humans.
Koko Head Stairs
This is the best spot if you’re willing to work for it— 1,048 giant steps to the top make for a very sweaty, challenging climb, but the view on the other side is well worth the effort. I’ve probably done this hike 100 times and each time I hate it a little bit on the way up—okay, sometimes I loathe it—but I always feel accomplished and proud at the end. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes if you’re super fit and hustling, up to an hour if you’re taking breaks. It’s only about a mile up, but it’s a steep climb. Again, bring a light with you for the way up, but make sure to shine it down to the steps or you’ll blind the regulars who may be jogging down for their second round. And don’t forget water!
Diamond Head Road Lookout
If you’re not up for an early morning hike, this is the easiest spot to get to. Just drive up Diamond Head Road, park your car and get out. Here you can catch the surfers and sunrise at the same time. You can also park at the bottom of the road near Kapiolani Park and go for a steady uphill walk, ending at this view before you turn head back down.
Hanauma Bay Ridge Trail
Another beautiful hike at Sunrise—this trail is a bit steep, but mostly paved. It takes you up above Hanauma Bay Beach for a stunning panoramic view. Disclaimer—this trail is technically closed. I don’t condone breaking rules or laws, but many people do this trail every day—so you can make the decision on your own, but just know there is a sign that says no trespassing when you arrive.
